Augusta Southern Railroad


The Augusta Southern was formed from the 1893 reorganization ofaugusta southern herald the Augusta, Gibson, and Sandersville Railroad which had constructed an 80-mile line between Augusta and Sandersville in 1884-86.

In 1894 the Augusta Southern purchased the 3.5-mile Sandersville and Tennille Railroad. At Tennille a connection was made with the Macon-Savannah line of the Central of Georgia.

In 1897 the Augusta Southern was leased to the South Carolina and Georgia Railroad. After the lease was ended in 1901, the line came under the control of the Southern Railway.

The railroad entered receivership and was acquired by the Georgia and Florida in 1919. It was abandoned in 1934.
